Agronomic performance of two generations (F12 and F13) of thirteen winter wheat composite cross wheat populations with differing cultivation histories in 2014/15. Organic Eprints
Weedon, Odette; Brumlop, Sarah; Heinrich, Sven; Boening, Andreas; Elsner, Maren; Finckh, Maria R.; Lammerts van Bueren, E.T.; Nuijten, E.; Messmer, Monika; Baresel, Jörg Peter; Goldringer, I.; Péter, Mikó; Megyeri, Maria; Borgen, Anders; Rasmussen, Søren K.; Pearce, Bruce; Wolfe, Martin.
As environmental and agronomic conditions are heterogeneous between and within locations, diversity within varieties or crop populations should increase adaptability to the changing and variable range of growing environments. The additional pressure of plant genetic diversity loss, has driven novel breeding approaches such as Composite Cross Populations (CCPs) and other genotype mixtures, thereby increasing both intra- and inter-varietal diversity and ensuring a “wider adaptation” capacity for crop varieties (Döring et al., 2011). A winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) CCP was created by intercrossing 20 varieties in 2001, through collaboration with the Elm Farm Research Centre and the John Innes Institute. In 2005, a seed batch of the F4 was equally...

Association Mapping for Common Bunt Resistance in Wheat Organic Eprints
Steffan, Philipp; Borgen, Anders; Backes, Gunter; Rasmussen, Søren K..
Common bunt, caused by Tilletia caries and T. foetida, is a fungal disease of wheat world wide. Infection, occurring via seed borne teliospores, is generally controlled by the application of seed treatments prior to sowing. Farming systems like organic agriculture with a very limited range of organic seed treatments available rely heavily on common bunt resistance genes within wheat. In the framework of the BIOBREED project an association study in winter wheat was conducted, aiming at the identification of genetic loci linked to resistance towards common bunt in wheat. 152 European wheat cultivars were phenotyped for their resistance reaction for the two consecutive years 2011/12 at Agrologica research station at Mariager. Infection was scored as percent...

Biodiversiteten kan nedsætte pesticidforbruget Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.

Biological control of common bunt (Tilletia tritici) in organic farming Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders; Davanlou, Mehrnaz.
Common bunt (Tilletia tritici syn. T. caries) is a significant seed borne plant disease in organic agriculture. General measures in ecological crop protection like crop rotation and manuring practice has in practice failed to control this disease, and direct seed treatment therefore seems to be necessary to ensure yield and food quality. Current study indicate that biological control can give successful control without negative effects on seed germination vigour. A combination of biocontrol agents and milk powder improves the effect of the biocontrol. Application of compost to the soil increases the frequency of this disease. The potential role of biocontrol within the principles of ecological disease management is being discussed.

Bliv din egen planteforædler Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.

Borgen, Anders.

Breeding for bunt resistance in organic wheat and spelt Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.
Common bunt (Tilletia caries) is one of the most evastating plant diseases, and a particular problem for organic seed production. Organic farming aims at controlling pests and diseases with the use of biodiversity and resistance. However most organic wheat fields today are sown with monocultures of pure line varieties, and resistance to common bunt is rarely used, even this disease causes severe problems for seed producers and for farm saved seed, as infected seed lots are discarded because of contamination with bunt spores. To improve the system, organic wheat needs resistance to common bunt that is effective enough to prevent development of the disease over time. For this reason several initiatives are ongoing to improve bunt resistance in organic wheat...

Brug egen såsæd i økologisk jordbrug Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.

Brush cleaning to remove fungal spores from seed lots Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.
Common bunt is infecting wheat seedling just after sowing, in the heterotrophic phase before seedling emergence. The seed per se is healthy at the time of sowing, but gets infected from spores resting on the seed surface. Bechel et al. 1998 has shown that only a minor fraction of the spores of the the closely related bunt species T.contraversa in a seed lot end up in the flour, while the majority are removed during the cleaning of the seed before or during milling. However, little is known about the destiny of the spores during the cleaning process of seed intented for sowing. Seed lots contaminated with bunt spores during threshing was cleaned in a brush cleaner (ø=400mm) (http://www.westrup.com/HAsideeng.htm) with and without precleaning. Airstream...

Common bunt resistant wheat composite cross populations Organic Eprints
Steffan, Philipp; Borgen, Anders; Backes, Gunter; Rasmussen, Søren K..
Utilising diverse populations instead of single line varieties is expected to lead to a number of advantages in cereal production. These include reduced epidemics of plant diseases, improved weed competition and better exploitation of soil nutrients, resulting in improved yield stability. However, a number of challenges must be met before diverse wheat populations can be introduced into commercial wheat production: one of these is the development of breeding technologies based on mass selection which enable breeders and farmers to improve specific traits in populations and maintain diversity at the same time. BIOBREED is a project started in Denmark in 2011 to meet these challenges for wheat population breeding. The project is focusing on the development...

Comparative evaluation of phytochemical profiles and identification of flavonoids in cereal grains Organic Eprints
Liu, Q; Borgen, Anders; Trust, Beta.
The phytochemicals including flavonoids and phenolic acids mainly contained in the outer layer of the kernels are key factors responsible for the biofunctionality of whole grains. The phytochemical profiles of twelve grain samples comprising 6 wheats, 3 barleys and 3 oats were studied for comparative evaluation of their antioxidant properties. Total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activities (DPPH and ORAC) of the grain extracts were measured. The bound phenolic acids were identified and quantified using HPLC and mass spectrometry. The flavonoids in different grain were analyzed using HPLC and tandem mass spectrometric techniques. TPC in acidified methanol extracts ranged from 164 to 226, 264-391, and 308-331 mg/100 g for wheat, oats and barley,...

Control of seed borne diseasees in organic seed propagation Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.
Introduction The key control measure of plant diseases in organic agriculture is crop rotation, mixed cropping and moderate fertilization. A wide range of plant diseases can be controlled or minimized in this way. However, at least one group of plant diseases, the seed borne diseases, cannot. The seed borne diseases are not transmitted through the soil, and crop rotation is therefore an insufficient tool. Mixed cropping is impractical in seed propagation, where seed purity according to the seed legislation is imperative. The fertilization level primarily has an impact on facultative saprophytes, and not on the specialized seed pathogens. Seed borne diseases were the first plant pathogens to be controlled by pesticides. Heavy metals has been used as...

Control of seed borne diseases in organic cereals and legumes Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.
In Denmark, most organic farmers uses organic propagated cereals and legumes for seeding, and all seed lots are tested for infections of seed borne pathogens before sowing. About 50% of all see lots are discarded based on this assessment, but huge differences occur between year and crop, which makes planning of seed production impossible. Some years up to 90% of the seed lots of a crop may be discarded e.g. peas in year 2000. The major cause of this are: Tilletia tritici in wheat, Dreschlera graminea, D. teres and Ustilago nuda in barley, Fusarium spp in triticale, and Ascochyta spp in peas. This situation calls for research focusing on this specific problem in the organic plant production. Research in organic seed production, handling and use...
